WaterSENSE REINFORM EC Project
Why REINFORM?
Building on the success of WaterSENSE, the REINFORM project, funded under Horizon Europe, takes EO-based water monitoring to the next level by refining its technical capabilities and expanding its application. A key focus is sustainability in irrigated agriculture, particularly in the cotton sector, where water use efficiency is essential for long-term viability.
Agricultural sustainability increasingly depends on reliable, large-scale monitoring of water productivity. Growers and decision-makers need accurate data to improve irrigation practices, reduce water waste, and mitigate environmental impacts. REINFORM builds on WaterSENSE to scale up these efforts, providing granular, accessible, and stakeholder-driven insights.
What is REINFORM?
REINFORM enhances and extends the capabilities of WaterSENSE by:
- Advancing EO-based water productivity indicators, improving farm-scale water balance assessments.
- Refining hybrid hydrological models to achieve higher precision in water resource tracking.
- Developing sustainability reporting tools tailored to cotton growers and agricultural stakeholders.
- Demonstrating scalability beyond Australia, ensuring the methodologies are adaptable across Europe and other irrigated regions.
How is REINFORM set up?
REINFORM builds on WaterSENSE’s core technologies but incorporates new scientific and operational advancements to optimize resource management:
- Enhanced EO & Data Science Innovations
- Advanced EO-based evapotranspiration models further improve irrigation efficiency assessments.
- AI-driven remote sensing techniques are being refined to detect water productivity at multiple scales.
- Sustainability Reporting for the Cotton Sector
- Co-developing key water-use indicators with cotton industry stakeholders.
- Supporting sustainable farming strategies by providing transparent water use insights.
- Scalability & Global Application
- Expanding beyond Australia, demonstrating usability across different agricultural and climatic conditions.
- Ensuring adaptability to various water governance frameworks and sustainability policies.
- User-Centered Design & Stakeholder Engagement
- Collaboration with cotton growers ensures practical and relevant tools.
- Real-time feedback loops refine the usability of the platform and indicators.
Through REINFORM, WaterSENSE’s innovations are evolving into an even more powerful system, delivering next-generation EO-based solutions for precision water management and agricultural sustainability.
